Last week I got sick. Probably allergies, but I felt pretty lousy, sneezing, hoarse etc. We have had the windows open at our house for about a month. You can almost see the pollen in the air, and everything feels damp from all the humidity.

I have wanted to close the windows and turn on the air conditioning, but have resisted so that I don’t have to hear my husband say ‘it’s only May!”

I mentioned to my husband that I felt under the weather. It was pretty obvious by my watery red eyes, and the fact that I practically had no voice at all. As I mowed, did laundry and other chores, he worked alongside me as he always does. Later, he took a nap on the couch while I folded clothes. When he awoke he said “You look so tired”. This week he got sick. Probably allergies. He is sneezing and waking up every hour during the night to get up and groan, and then wakes me to tell me how bad he feels.

Last night he stopped at the store on the way home, and bought bags of over-the-counter medication. When he got to the house, he closed all the windows in the house and then turned on the air conditioner as he was ‘hot’ and ‘needed his sleep’.

I resisted the impulse to show him the calendar that was on page MAY.

His current conversation is punctuated with comments of his ailments and how bad he feels. Surprisingly though, he is still able to go to the gym and also has a healthy appetite. Although he is ‘suffering’, he scoffs at the idea of going to the Doctor to get a proper prescription, and I know that it is because most men believe that ANY visit to the doctor runs the risk of them bringing out the rubber gloves and having them bend over……… And we are the ‘weaker sex’?????????????
